Every business needs a single North Star metric — the one number that best captures the value you deliver to customers. For a SaaS company, it might be weekly active users. For a consulting firm, it's repeat engagement rate. For e-commerce, it's purchase frequency.
Once you have your North Star, work backward to identify 3-4 input metrics that drive it. These become your operating dashboard. Everything else is noise.
Revenue per employee tells you about operational efficiency. Customer acquisition cost payback period tells you about sustainability. Net revenue retention tells you about product-market fit. Track these three and you'll see problems months before they show up in top-line revenue.
